Local pastor writes book for fathers to help sons navigate thru life

MANSFIELD — You can never judge a book by its cover. One local pastor has written a book that is actually composed of twenty-five personal letters to his college-aged son. The book is designed to cultivate a Biblical worldview for young persons entering the crossroads of adulthood.

Pastor Robert Kurtz

When penning “Take the Lead: 25 Letters of Advice to My Son,” Reverend Robert Kurtz will be the first to claim he does not have parenting ‘all figured out.’ His objective is for his son, a Junior in college, and college-aged persons in general, to look at life thru the lens of the Bible.

“All three of my children are all a work in progress, just like their Dad.” he says with a smile. “My desire is to see my children have a heart for GOD and for their generation to have that same experience.”

Reverend Kurtz serves as Senior Pastor at Mansfield Temple Baptist. With its own private school, the church has multiple ministries geared towards youth.

“I hope the letters in this book will be something a dad can read together with his son. The book is designed to spark dialogue and allow opportunities to share testimonies and personal applications. It is my prayer that the Biblical wisdom shared in this book will encourage sons to choose and pursue godliness. GOD’s ways are the best ways and the godly life is the only path to the blessed life.”

Food for thought discussion sections are provided after each chapter. Topics include vision, loving your mother, gratitude, discernment, finances, and seeking godly advice.

The book was published by Striving Together Publications, a ministry out of Lancaster Baptist Church in Lancaster, California. Kurtz’s sister is Dr. Deb Demirjian who teaches at West Coast Baptist College. His sister was able to make the connection with Monica Bass, the Editor of Striving Together Publications.

Pastor Kurtz explains, “I have had goals I have been blessed to accomplish. Three times I prayed the opening invocation at the Statehouse, twice for the Senate and once for the House. This book was on my bucket list of things to do. I have wanted to write this book for several years.”

The pastor admits the second chapter “Prepare Yourself: GOD Seeks the Elite,” was the most challenging. The chapter discusses the story of Gideon and how GOD chooses to reveal his power and seeks human instruments to participate.

Th book says, “Understand the value of preparation and take advantage of the opportunities the LORD gives you to learn and prepare. Your preparation today may determine your usefulness tomorrow.”
