Former Ohio instructor calls term ‘Christian yoga’ stretching the truth

MEDINA — One former yoga instructor says some church-goers and school educators mistakenly believe yoga is just stretching. While stretching is beneficial, she says yoga is not good even if you slap the word ‘Christian’ in front of it.

After having a radical change of heart, Amy Dudley says there is nothing Christian about the practice of yoga no matter what people say.

“Yoga is Eastern Religion. There are several so-called Christian versions of yoga, like ‘Holy Yoga,’ ‘Rev on the Mat,’ and ‘Christian Yoga Association.’ But by changing the name of what you call it, or by doing yoga poses ‘focusing on Jesus,’ I was still deceived. I was certified to teach ‘Rev on the Mat’ so I could teach at local YMCA’s and churches. It makes my stomach turn as these well-meaning fitness-enthusiasts loved Jesus and preached Jesus, but are still moving one degree in the wrong direction and departing from Biblical Scripture.”

Formerly a fitness studio co-owner in Medina, Ohio, Dudley was a yoga instructor for thirteen years, obtaining her certification thru YogaFit. She taught yoga classes of up to twenty students at a time and attended yoga seminars around the world, including Australia, Hawaii, and Florida.

Dudley says she originally started yoga for exercise purposes. As she progressed in yoga, she found yoga involves physical, mental and spiritual discipline. This is why some public schools are using yoga as a spiritually-transformative method to improve student behavior and academic performance.

“Parents have their heads in the sand if they allow school districts to integrate yoga during compulsory classroom learning. The public schools are actually proselytizing little minds and introducing them to a form of spirituality that could be contrary to their religious upbringing. I should know, because I used to teach it.”

I should know, because I used to teach it.”

“I was going in the wrong direction and was naive until I repented and stopped practicing yoga in August of 2020. I thank GOD for answering my prayers,” says Dudley.

Dudley explains that if persons practice yoga “asanas,” or positions, they retain elements of their earlier spiritual meanings. The “Sun Salutation” in yoga is designed to greet Surya, the Hindu sun god. “Warrior Poses” are associated with Virabhadrasana involving the deity Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva. Likewise, the Lotus position is used in opening a person up for a spirit to come in.

Dudley says yoga techniques for exercise cannot be separated from its philosophy. She calls yoga a practice of psychosomatic exercises and has a literal meaning of ‘Yoke’ meaning ‘to join’, ‘to unite’ or ‘to attach’.

“People need the truth and to understand yoga’s origins. Scripture says ‘Not all good things are good. All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.”

With several Ohio schools discontinuing the practice of yoga during school, Dudley has comments about another movement of sorts.

“I am blown away by how GOD is using the clergy in North Central Ohio to expose the indoctrination of Eastern Religion occurring in classrooms across the region. I was immersed in yoga as all this was unfolding, now I have been set free. It is my hope that as an ex-yoga instructor, I too can inform other school districts of the pitfalls of yoga. I believe GOD will use my testimony to rescue others just like I was rescued.”
